When we think of the Latin Language, we tend to reflect on our school and university days when we were forced to sing traditional anthems that we rarely understood. Many people know that Latin was once a significant language, but feel that there is now no place for a lingo that only a handful of scholars can understand. The Latin language is, however, more than the words to an old anthem or the description of a crest on a blazer. Is Latin making a comeback or has this language has had its day?

Latin is seen as a dead language because it was abandoned more than a millennium ago, but the history of Latin is fruitful and diverse. During Roman times, Latin was a standardised language and imperative for communication. But, as the Roman Empire began to decline, Latin followed. The language struggled to stay afloat as time moved on and people in different regions began forming their own dialects. These languages are now known as Romance and form popular languages and include Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. Currently, there is a language called Romansh used in a small town in Switzerland that is said to bear the closest resemblance to Latin.

However, Latin is making a significant comeback in school and university systems, with more young people applying for academic courses to learn the history of the language as well as Latin translation. It seems that Latin vocabulary is neither a dead nor alive language, but is rather an evolving language that is still in use, even if by a minority. The language itself is highly complicated and inflective and can be easily confused or misunderstood, which has made it difficult to learn with ease.

Even though Latin is not used anymore in our daily lives, many individuals still have the desire to learn and study the language and because of this, it continues to be taught. It still has a significant influence on Western languages, as concepts of grammar and syntax contain Latin origins. Many still use Latin phrases and sayings without even realising it. The Latin language may seem dead to many people, but as many legends in the past have proven – even the dead can come back to life
